Mother’s Day is so often a sweet time of enjoying our kids and honoring the mamas in our lives. But many of our hearts are hurting around Mother’s Day. Whether you’ve lost your mom or a child, lost touch with someone you love, or just yearn for rich fellowship with other women, the Mother’s Day grief is real. And even if you’re a college student with no motherhood issues in sight, you’re still mothering other women as you faithfully teach younger women to walk in Christ (Titus 2). Maybe your sweet little sis in Christ has rejected you; maybe you’ve just lost touch. No matter the cause of the pain, it’s tempting to cave in on ourselves, allowing loneliness and fear of rejection steal our joy and our love for others.
But this pain? This is exactly what the gospel is for. When Mother’s Day hurts, God knows. Our Father God is the perfect parent. Ever affectionate, authoritative, giving, and wise. Romans 8 says that we are His children, given the spirit of adoption by whom we cry out “Abba, Father!” Isaiah says “I will not leave you as orphans, I will come to you.” And oh, He came!
Christ’s work on the cross has sealed us into His family, even when we feel alone. His resurrection gave us new life so that we can trust God enough with our broken hearts to love others well, no matter what pain the mama and child figured in our life have caused us. It also heals our sweet hearts as we miss lost loved ones and yearn for those children we don’t yet have.
This Mother’s Day, let’s reach out. Let’s trust our good, good Father enough to bless someone else. Maybe there’s a hurting mama, a clueless college student, a lonesome grandmother that’s on your heart. Maybe you’ve hidden so long in your cave that mothering others seems impossible. Why not just write a quick note of encouragement to a woman in your life that’s blessed you? Maybe it’s simply time to rejoice in the children and women in your life that the Lord has given you to love.
It’s so easy to disregard this e-mail and go on with your weekend. But then you run the risk of only increasing the distance in your relationships, and the pain of loss. As we trust God with the good as well as the bad in our relationships, He increases our joy.
I look forward to hearing the ways God grows your relationships this Mother’s Day!
Praying joy over your mama relationships this Mother’s Day,
